One of the best things about a back kitchen is how customizable it can be. This is the space where function absolutely comes before form, but that does not mean it cannot be beautiful. In my own home, the back kitchen has become a true workhorse. I designed one side with closed cabinetry, the side visible from the main kitchen, to keep things sleek and tidy. The opposite wall features open shelving for pantry staples and canned goods, making it easy to scan and update the grocery list. A door leads directly out to our grill porch, so when we are entertaining, the grilled meats come in through the back and get carved or plated without disrupting the main space. It is also the perfect spot for our dogs, with food bowls, storage, and access to the fenced side yard all tucked neatly into this functional zone.

Because the back kitchen is more private, it is also a space where you can play. While the main kitchen often leans classic or neutral for longevity, the back kitchen is your chance to have fun with bold colors, wallpaper, funky light fixtures, or even whimsical hardware.
